Figuring out the CPA Exam Application Process
Unfortunately, the CPA exam application process isn’t as easy as it could be. Most first time candidates don’t have a clue about what they need to do in order to apply for the exam, sign up to take each section, and actually go to the Prometric testing center itself. I remember when I first starting my CPA journey, I felt the same way. I had no idea what I was supposed to do to get all setup to take the CPA exam. Luckily, I had some advice from the firm I worked for at the time.
That’s why I decided to write this short post about how to apply for the exam and what to expect. The first step in the application process is to get your education requirements cleared by your state board of accounting. Every state has slightly different requirements as far as classes and credits go. Once you fill out an application form online and send in your college transcripts, your state board will review your classes and send you an acceptance form notifying that you are eligible to sit for the CPA exam.
After your state board approves your requirements, you need to send in your application to NASBA to actually take the exam. NASBA reviews your application standings and your educational history before they approve you to schedule a date to sit for a section. Once they approve you to sit, you have six months to actually schedule a testing date. If you don’t schedule your date within six months, you will lose your approval and have to file out another application and pay an additional fee. This is commonly referred to as a notice to sit.
Now that you have your NIT, you can actually sign up to take the CPA exam. This is the point that you’re really going to need to start studying.
